What is Built-Up Roofing?

Built-up roofing (BUR), often called "tar and gravel" roofing, is one of the oldest and most reliable commercial roofing systems. It consists of alternating layers of bitumen (asphalt or coal tar) and reinforcing fabrics, topped with a protective surface of gravel, mineral cap sheets, or reflective coatings. This time-tested system provides exceptional waterproofing and durability for large flat roofs.
